Wengen: Where the Swiss Alps Slow You Down — And That’s the Point
There are Alpine destinations that impress on arrival and fade by the second day. Wengen is not one of them.
Perched on a sun-drenched terrace at 1,274 metres above sea level in the Bernese Oberland, this car-free village in the Lauterbrunnen Valley has been drawing discerning travellers for well over a century. The view alone – the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau rising directly opposite, the valley dropping away below – is the kind that genuinely stops conversation. But for corporate groups, what makes Wengen extraordinary is something subtler: the moment you step off the cogwheel train and realise there are no cars, no traffic, no ambient noise of a modern city. Just mountain air, cowbells and a pace of life that immediately shifts something.
For leadership retreats, management meetings and incentive programmes where the objective is genuine focus, creative thinking or meaningful reconnection – that shift is not a side effect. It is the point.
A DESTINATION THAT EARNS ITS REPUTATION
Wengen is internationally known as the home of the Lauberhorn – the oldest downhill ski race in the world, held annually on the legendary course above the village. But the Lauberhorn is just one facet of a destination that operates at a consistently high level across all seasons.
In winter, Wengen connects to the wider Jungfrau ski area – one of Switzerland’s most extensive, with access to Grindelwald and Mürren via Kleine Scheidegg. In summer and autumn, the hiking infrastructure is exceptional: the Männlichen plateau, the Lauterbrunnen Valley trails and the path to Kleine Scheidegg offer routes for every level of ambition.
And then there is the Jungfraujoch – the “Top of Europe” at 3,454 metres, accessible by rack railway from Wengen — a programme element that no other destination in Switzerland can replicate. For international incentive groups, arriving at a glacier at the roof of Europe is, simply, unforgettable.
THE GRAND HOTEL BELVEDERE — A NEW CHAPTER FOR WENGEN
Part of the French Beaumier collection, the Grand Hotel Belvedere was comprehensively reimagined and relaunched in 2024. The result is something genuinely rare: a hotel that honours its history without being imprisoned by it.
The building dates to 1912. The historic fireplace, carved woodwork and Art Nouveau bones remain intact. What surrounds them has been thoroughly, confidently updated: sculptural lighting, locally sourced spruce floors, natural lime walls and green granite bathrooms. The outdoor pool – a brutalist jewel set against the Jungfrau panorama – has already become one of the most photographed spaces in the Bernese Oberland. The Susanne Kaufmann Spa carries the scent of pomegranate through a minimalist onsen-inspired wellness circuit: heated indoor and outdoor pools, sauna, hammam and relaxation spaces where the mountain view does half the therapeutic work.
The result is a hotel with a distinctly French sensibility – considered, confident, never overdone – set firmly in the Swiss Alps. 90 rooms and suites, each with views of either the Jungfrau massif or the Lauterbrunnen Valley.
TWO BUILDINGS. MAXIMUM FLEXIBILITY.
The property spans two buildings – 36 rooms in one, 54 in the other – and each can be privatised independently for a full buyout. The meeting spaces are equally flexible: designed for everything from formal board-level sessions to yoga, breathwork, meditation or dinner events. Large windows ensure the Jungfrau is always part of the room.
Capacity: up to 80 guests for seminars and meetings, up to 180 for banquets and social events.
WILL GORDON AND THE BRASSERIE BELVEDERE
Executive Chef Will Gordon brings a philosophy grounded in responsibility and curiosity: ingredient-led, rooted in local and foraged produce from the Bernese Alps, and informed by a genuine commitment to sustainable cuisine. Alpine classics are reimagined rather than replicated – the result works equally well for guests who eat everything and guests who do not eat meat.
The vegan fondue has been described by reviewers as genuinely convincing. Breakfast is a highlight: homemade jams, local bakery bread, plant-based milks and fresh fruits. Vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free and dairy-free options are available across all dining venues – handled with care rather than as afterthoughts.
The Sonnenbad Lounge and Terrace provides a more informal option: wood-fired comfort food, raclette cheeseburgers, fondue and drinks on the south-facing terrace with uninterrupted mountain views.
GETTING THERE
Wengen is car-free – and for a corporate group, that is an advantage. Zurich Airport is one of Europe’s best-connected international hubs, with direct flights from most major cities worldwide. From the airport, the transfer takes approximately two hours by train. The final leg – the historic cogwheel railway from Lauterbrunnen up to Wengen – is 15 minutes of scenery that sets the tone for everything that follows. From Bern, the journey is around 45 minutes to Lauterbrunnen, then the train to Wengen.

THE CASE FOR WENGEN
Some destinations are chosen because they are impressive. Wengen is chosen because it works – because the combination of enforced stillness, extraordinary landscape and an exceptional hotel creates the conditions for groups to actually think, connect and recover. The Grand Hotel Belvedere has added a new dimension to what was already a compelling destination: a property that meets the expectations of international corporate clients without losing the character that makes Wengen worth going to in the first place.
For management retreats, leadership offsites and incentive programmes where the experience should match the ambition of the people attending – Wengen deserves serious consideration.

Frequently asked questions
Is Wengen accessible for international groups?
Yes. Zurich Airport connects directly to most major European cities and has long-haul connections worldwide. From the airport, the transfer to Wengen takes approximately two hours by train — the final leg on the historic cogwheel railway from Lauterbrunnen is 15 minutes. The hotel provides a luggage transfer service from the station on arrival.
How does the car-free environment affect group logistics?
Practically, it simplifies them. All guests arrive by train, luggage is transferred by the hotel, and within the village everything is on foot or by the hotel’s electric vehicle. The absence of cars removes coordination complexity and, more importantly, creates an immediate sense of separation from everyday working life.
What is the capacity at the Grand Hotel Belvedere for corporate events?
The hotel accommodates up to 80 guests for seminars and meetings, and up to 180 for banquets and social events. The two buildings — 36 and 54 rooms respectively — can be privatised independently or together for a full hotel buyout.
Can the hotel accommodate diverse dietary requirements?
Yes. Executive Chef Will Gordon’s cuisine is ingredient-led and plant-forward by philosophy — vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free and dairy-free options are available across all dining venues, handled with the same care as the rest of the menu rather than as exceptions.
Is Wengen suitable for year-round corporate programmes?
Yes. Winter and summer both offer strong programme options: skiing and mountain experiences in winter, hiking, trail running and the Jungfraujoch excursion in summer and autumn. The hotel operates year-round.
